There are a number of reasons for this of course, including the fact that as a richer society it's possible for people to get access to more addictive substances. There's also the point that we know a great deal more about what addiction is now so that behaviors that would previously have been classed as odd or wrong are now recognised for what they are: addictions. However, there's a fortunate happenstance as well: precisely because we know more about drug addiction we also know more about drug treatment.

For example, we now know that it's often not the addiction itself which is the entire problem: there may or can be (and some would insist must be) an underlying problem which led to the addiction. Unless that underlying problem is also addressed then the addiction will always be poised to return: what AA sometimes calls "dry drunks" for example. This is what has led to one of the major advances in drug treatment, "dual diagnosis". Not just looking to end the addiction but the problem which led to the addiction as well.

We also know that drug treatment in the normal, everyday, surroundings doesn't work all that well. The reminders, behaviors and temptations to relapse are simply too great: which is why residential or campus-like treatment centers are the modern norm.

It is true that addictions are becoming more common: but the good news is that we're also, in parallel, working out how to defeat such addictions.Tim Worstallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13161727860817121071noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13594138.post-7814001249419757282009-11-10T10:31:00.000-08:002009-11-10T10:34:54.091-08:00The Carrie Prejean sex tape is child pornographyNow here's an interesting turn up for the books: the Carrie Prejean sex tape is child pornography.

Now we all know the story about the Prejean sex tape. She was suing the pageant organisers and they were suing her. Then up pops this sex tape and her case collapses: for you've got to sing an agreement that you've not done such things beore you enter such pageants.

However, it now turns out that she made the tape when she was 17. That makes it child pornography. Anyone selling, distributing or even watching it, could go to jail.

So don't start lçooking around your video stores for the Carrie Prejean sex tape: it's child pornography and you're simply not going to find it.Tim Worstallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13161727860817121071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13594138.post-47005230209204657072007-06-25T08:36:00.000-07:002007-06-25T08:39:31.708-07:00Is Katie Holmes Your Favourite Celebrity? So, is Katie Holmes your favourite celebrity? Marwari food is traditionally vegetarian, though it has been broadened in recent times to include meat dishes.
The cuisine developed in one of the hottest corners of India, the Rajasthan province, in an age when cows were plentiful but refrigerators not yet invented, so milk and its products had to be used up quickly.
Lashings of sweet buttermilk are used instead of water, which is scarce, to make gravies and sauces in many of the dishes that will be served to Hurley's guests on Friday at the Meherangarh Fort, said Arora, whose colleagues have been planning the meals.
Dal bhati churma is perhaps the quintessential Marwari dish, in which tough, wheat dumplings are bashed into crumbs and mixed into a soup of savory lentils.
Whear dumplings and lentil soup. So why aren't they helping it any?
Physical CD sales have been in decline for the last five years, and according to various estimates are expected to fall another 15%-20% again this year. And while digital revenue is on the rise, it is not yet reversing the trend. Sony BMG global digital business president Thomas Hesse says that if physical revenue drops by 15%, digital revenue must rise by 60% to compensate. This year, he expects net revenue to fall.
So what are labels doing other than licensing their music to digital services that they hope will become successful? According to many service providers and industry analysts, the answer is -- nothing.
"There's no plan, no sense of direction," one digital retailer executive says. "They're just hoping somebody is going to figure all this out for them."
To date, that somebody has been Apple -- its iTunes store commands 70% of all digital music sales and the iPod around 80% of all digital music devices. Yet, record labels are the first to point out that Apple can't reverse their falling fortunes on its own. They need more services selling more music to more people. And although labels have tried to support potential competitors to iTunes, such as Microsoft's Zune bid, these services are merely limping along.
There's only one way this would make sense. Stop signing new artists altogether, slim the company right down and live off the residuals. Otherwise, they've got to find some way of dealing with it.
Tim Worstallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13161727860817121071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13594138.post-85919952608971369662007-02-13T10:30:00.001-08:002007-02-12T08:12:21.992-08:00Peter Frampton's Grammy
Well, I'm just about old enough to remember Frampton Comes Alive, beofre he went and spent all the money on cociane. Then paid her $28 million to go away. Great job if you can get it, right?

Her official website is here.

A couple of Mariah Carey fan sites are here and here.

The Wikipedia entry gives a good pooted biography andhas links to her albums and lyrics.Tim Worstallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13161727860817121071noreply@blogger.com
